Transportation

Traffic congestion and gridlock are major issues for the Woodbridge District and Prince William County residents.  Traffic tie ups along US Route 1 and Interstate 95 are commonplace as residents travel to and from work each morning and evening.  With the increasing population in the Woodbridge District, residents have begun putting more stress on a road network that already has major problems.

Prince William County has tried to correct this problem by creating its own transportation agency, which has funded numerous road improvements, and by taking part in multi-modal mass transit programs.  Improvements to our transportation infrastructure are underway to ensure that travel through Woodbridge is easier and faster for both residents and visitors.

Virginia Department of Transportation recently completed a $123 million project that  added a fourth lane on each side of the highway, from the Purple Heart Bridge over the Occoquan River to Lorton Road in Fairfax County.

The expansion of Route 1 is critical to alleviating gridlock in the Woodbridge District.  Funding is now available to complete widening from Mary’s Way toAnnapolis Wayin northWoodbridgeas well as the segment of Route 1 fromNeabsco Millis RoadtoFeatherstone Road.

In addition to making improvements to the existing infrastructure the vision of New Woodbridge includes evaluating a variety of transit options.   Supervisor Principi has been instrumental in creating a regional stakeholders group to conduct a market analysis for high-speed ferry service along the Potomac River fromWoodbridgetoWashingtonD.C.  He has also been involved in beginning the dialogue to determine the feasibility of extending Metrorail fromSpringfieldtoWoodbridge.
